Marc Bakker and Marjolijn Botje, together with their daughters Floor & Kiki, are the proud owners of African Queen Guesthouse in Noordhoek. David & Nicolette are the most able and friendly managers you can wish for and are living full time on the premises.
Our guests can expect a high level of hands-on service and hospitality. Our aim is to offer our guests the most enjoyable stay that make them want to come back to our guesthouse time and time again.
Marc has a long history with South Africa where he first came to the country in 1983 as a Rotary Exchange Student. He spent a year at Dale College in King William’s Town. In 2002 we bought a house in Kommetjie where we spent many happy holidays. We have been living permanently in the Southern Peninsula since 2007 and have an excellent knowledge of Cape Town and the surrounding areas.
Marjolijn has lived an international life as a daughter of ‘Shell expats’. She has real African roots as she was born in Nigeria but lived in Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Holland and the UK. She has a degree from the University of Amsterdam in European Studies and has had a previous corporate career in telecommunications working for Verizon Business. Marc has a law degree from Leiden University but went on to work in sports – and lifestyle management.
Marc has been active cricket player and played representative cricket for The Netherlands. Although a double knee operation has ‘slowed’ down Marc considerably he still enjoys playing golf (hc. 7) and he and Marjolijn are members at the Clovelly Golf Club.
We have a passion for good food & wine and we love the outdoors; we feel privileged we live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. We are very keen on sustainability; we recycle & reuse and we don’t use pesticides our organic vegetable garden. Our 2 pools and all geysers in the guest rooms are heated through solar power and the eggs for breakfast come mostly from our own chickens.
We added a new salt water solar heated swimming pool (10 x 3,5m), 2 new rooms (Ocean and Sunset), a deck for the Honeymoon Suite and a sunset lapa. Also a sauna is now in operation; the little ‘shack’ where the sauna is housed in has been built with mainly recycled materials.
Our Dedicated Team
Gloria has been with us since the very beginning. She lives with her husband Wellington in Masimphumele. Her three children Lindile, Sandile and Odwa stay with her family in the Eastern Cape where they go to school. Always running around with a smile on her face, we are truly blessed to have her on board.
After opening the guesthouse in September 2013, we quickly realized we needed some extra help. Susan was the answer to our problem! She lives in Masimphumele and is the daughter of Amos, our trusted builder and handyman.
Melody is our third lady that takes care of your breakfast, cleans your room and the guesthouse. She is very precise and she is a pleasure to work with. Melody comes from Zimbabwe and lives with her husband Kuda (who does odd paint-jobs for us) and her young daughter. Her other 2 daughters live in Zimbabwe with her parents.
Lameck - Edson
Lameck worked at African Queen for 6 years and he performed miracles in our garden. Originally from Malawi, he came to Cape Town in 2003 in search for a better life. He now resides at African Crags Eco-Lodge where manages the property and he is host to our guests. He has a son Goli, who stays in Kommetjie and he and his wife Mercy has a little boy, Manasseh.
We replaced Lameck with Edson who originates from Zimbabwe. He is married and has 1 little boy.
